Growing into freedom

From the very beginning, Ryan made a clear decision: he was doing this for himself. That mindset strongly influenced everything that followed.

He was all in, devoted to the practices and remained open to shifting old ways of thinking, training, and moving.

Ryan wasn't just looking to fix a symptom, he was ready to step out of the old patterns and grow into ways of being that aligned with the person he was becoming.

IN RYans words

“I’ve always had a curved spine and rounded shoulders and thought ‘that’s just the way I am’. But more and more I found people pointing it out and thought I’ve got to do something about this.

I got put onto Jordan by a friend and it’s the best decision I could’ve made. After a consult, he assured me that we could change this. With 1 on 1 sessions and giving me the tools to best help my body, I was noticing changes within weeks.

And from what’s started as just wanting to correct my posture has turned now into an integral part of my routine for my body and more so now my mind and breathing.

My body has never felt better and that brings me a confidence boost to myself. “

Assessment; What we INITIALLY found

In Ryan’s initial assessment, we drew a line in the sand—measuring clear physical indicators of a body operating in a protective holding pattern:

  • Spinal Dynamics & Posture: His thoracic curve (upper to mid-back) was excessively rounded and locked in protective mode, meaning his breathing was hard to expand and the trunk had a hard time finding alignment

  • Ground Support & Overworking: We found a direct link between his feet not fully supporting his legs and hips, creating heavy tension through his quads and hip flexors. Because his foundation lacked support, his lower and upper back were constantly overworking

  • Breathing & Internal Systems: His breath was caught high in his chest, struggling to expand downward. This restriction was directly impacting his digestion, sluggish blood flow to his lower body, and leaving his energy drained

  • Under the Surface: During long bodyboarding sessions (often up to 3 hours), Ryan experienced severe muscle cramps; a clear sign of inhibited mineral absorption, restricted blood flow, and muscular compensation under demand.

Ryan's posture was holding him up in the best way it knew how too, but it was doing so at the cost of his breath, digestion, energy, and physical freedom in the ocean.

Realignment; Where We Placed Intention & Attention

Our work centred on shifting his system out of protection and back into functional stability from the ground up.

  • Restoring Diaphragmatic Breath & Rhythms: Reconnected his breath to his diaphragm to break the chest-holding pattern: supporting his digestion, improving circulation to his lower body, and creating a reliable tool to regulate his nervous system.

  • Evolving His Training Approach: Shifted his movement practice from traditional bodybuilding heavy lifts toward functional, sport-specific longevity. With the intent to keep him strong, agile, and aligned for bodyboarding.

  • Closed-Chain Stability: Focused on movements where his hands and feet maintained solid ground contact, retraining his brain to rebuild innate physical trust and safety in his joint structures, to open up communication more freely in his body

  • Ground Up Support: Re-established full weight-bearing support through his feet to systematically relieve chronic tension in his quads, hip flexors, lower back, and thoracic spine.

Integration; Beyond the studio

The physical alignment shifts have been amazing to watch, but I love seeing the impact that reaches far deeper into his daily life and performance:

  • Unlocking the Chest & Breath: Shifted from chest-restricted breathing to full, effortless diaphragmatic expansion that gives his entire system what it needs - Oxygen!

  • Grounded Foundation: Re-established dynamic support through his feet and hips, relieving the constant strain on his lower back and quad flexors, making long days at work easier on the body

  • Thoracic Decompression: A spine thats shifted from the protective, rounded upper back to an open, upright, and resilient posture that gives him greater access to his shoulders, especially for paddling

  • Ocean Freedom: Restored blood flow and neuromuscular efficiency, eliminating cramping and giving him full capacity during hours in the surf.

THE TAKEAWAY

Better alignment isn’t just about the looks, it influences the way you move and the flow of energy to your whole body. For Ryan, supporting his posture allowed far greater freedom in both his movement and thinking patterns. His whole perception of life has expanded by focusing on supportive ways for his body to find its home.

When you feel at home in your body more often, the safety and secure feeling this offers creates a far greater capacity for you to live more in alignment to what matters to you.
